Sudan protests spread as bread prices double, opposition leader detained

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses in El Geneina said that hundreds of students demonstrated in El Geneina on Sunday in protests against the prices hike.

Sporadic protests have erupted on Friday in Khartoum and the Gazira State in central Sudan against the recent government decision to increase the bread price.

On Sunday protests spread to downtown Khartoum and three cities to the south; the southwestern cities of Nyala and Geneina as well as al-Damazin, residents in these areas told Reuters.

Pictures and videos of protesters chanting anti-government slogans and burning tyres in the streets were uploaded on several social media websites.

"Gatherings and public symposia require prior permission, and any sabotage during protests is not allowed", the minister added, warning that the police forces would suppress any illegal protest.

The Bakeries Union said on Friday that the price of a loaf of bread had risen from 0.5 Sudanese pounds to 1 pound (5p to 10p).

That sent bread prices soaring and in response leading opposition groups have called for anti-government protests across the country.

Two senior leaders of the opposition Sudanese Congress Party have been detained by NISS agents, the party said in a statement.

Opposition forces attribute the deteriorating living condition and economic meltdown to corruption, lack of production policies, and lack of economic reform vision following the secession of South Sudan.

More than 200 people were killed in September 2013 during protests in cities and towns across Sudan after President Omar al-Bashir announced an end to fuel subsidies and the introduction of other austerity measures.

The authorities cracked down on those protests in an attempt to prevent a repeat of deadly unrest that followed a similar round of subsidy cuts in 2013.

Dozens of people were killed in 2013 when security forces crushed large street demonstrations, drawing global condemnation.
