Could Marauding Herdsmen Attack Stop Anytime Soon?
Despite the peace meeting by the Governor of Ekiti State following allegation over the dead of a herdsman by unknown person from the Tiv Community four day ago; the deceased, Babuga Dengi, was on Monday killed in a bush between Irele and Oke Ako in Ikole Local Government by people suspected to be from Benue enthicity
Barely 24hours an allegedly retaliatory murderous attack was unleashed on a eight months pregnant woman in Orin Ekiti, in Ido-Osi local government area of the State by yet to be identified armed persons.
Eyewitnesses reported that the pregnant woman, who was said to be of Tiv community, was shot in the head, and her eyes were plucked out as a result of the attack.
The assailants also injured one other person who is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
This attack is happening barely 24 hours after Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State summoned a peace meeting between the Fulani and Benue people and other stakeholders in Ekiti State, where he warned against reprisal attacks while cautioning all.
Fayose warned Fulani, Tivs against reprisal on Tuesday night during a meeting with Fulani herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, farmers, local hunters, security agencies and representatives of the Tiv community in the state.
He said there is no room for the killing of Fulani herders or farmers or anybody in the state and recent steps by his government were to prevent violence between farmers and herders and not to give anybody the license to unlawfully take human life.
Fayose, who warned Fulani herdsmen and Tiv farmers against turning Ekiti into a battlefield ordered security agencies in the state to also quickly fish out the killers of the cattle rearer.
He said, “I can’t accept anybody to be killed. If anybody killed anyone, I will make sure you are killed by ensuring justice. I’m sad about the killing in Benue but we don’t want brutality in Ekiti.
“I won’t accept any killing here, the only thing acceptable here is peace. I therefore plead with everybody to cooperate with us.”
