Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari Launches Animal Identification Management Solution

The recent launched of Animal Identification Management Solution (AIMS) at the Runka Game Reserve by Kastina State Government following an extensive consultations with leaders and members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) in Northern states of Kano, Katsina and Kaduna in partnership with MTN is a big plus to halting cattle rustling which is commonly observed in northern part of the country

Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari, speaking during the launch, said that
“The Katsina state government ventured into this project taking into accounts the call by the Federal Government for the diversification of the economy to the agricultural sector.

“Kastina state is privileged to partner with MTN Nigeria in the wake of security challenges occasioned by cattle rustling and other worrisome vices to launch this eye opening innovation.

“I want to inform this gathering that our effort to accommodate this proposal been supported by MTN is consistent with the World Organization for Annual Health.

“I therefore call on my colleagues, the executive governors of states in the North West and East to take clue from our initiative so that together we will prevent the movement of cattle rustling in our respective states.”

The MTN AIMS solution employed the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, which allow law enforcement agents, and relevant parties within the value chains to easily identify ownerships and origins of animals. Micro-chips, are embedded in each animals to effect such identification.

ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION
RFID technology works just like barcode. It helps farmers to have an holistic knowledge of their herds. Beside, it is most efficient, cost effective, cost sensitive and pragmatic. Moreover, it is a mandatory requirement in international trade

Animal Identification was introduced in 1999 to meet European Union requirements for cattle exports, especially traceability of cattle from birth to slaughter to enhancing;

Biosecurity
Global Market
Safety
Product Integrity

BENEFITS
Enhanced disease control
Point of sales validation
Identification of owners
Identification of cattle
Disease surveillance
Halt cattle hustling
Foreign trade accessibility.

This innovation will definite advance the vast benefit of traceability  domesticated and in global market. For instance, without AIMS, it might take weeks if not months to trace a public health concerns related to cattle meats, unlike when AIMS is implemented.
Spring 2003 took Michigan Department of Agriculture less than 15 minutes to complete a trace back compare to several weeks of visiting sale points, and farms to tracing cow to original herd
