Who Manufacture What Goes Into Your Mouth

How to Know Who Manufacture What Goes Into Your Mouth

A couple of months back, news of plastic rice filtered into the mainstream media sensitizing the populace in Nigeria and around the world to be a bit careful in shopping for this globally enjoyed stable food. Report of the news originated within the Asian continent as source of the food item was traced to China.

NAFDAC and NCS did put on a very good fight to intercept possibility of such commodity entering the country. Though the intervention from the regulatory bodies came late and test conducted help to allay fear of such product in circulation.   However I was not pleased with the analysis as test for arsenic level was absence in the report published.

The fact still stand that the whole world is skeptical of product made in China and other Asian countries. Is there possibility at a glance to differentiate which one is made in the USA , UK , Nigeria, Indonesia or China? Barcode could help out
This is our human right to know, but businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products 'made in china', so they use EAN-13 bar codes; digits associated with country of origin which don't necessarily specify where the product was manufactured or made, but rather where the bar code itself was registered.

Barcode are numeric and coded symbol that most of us never think about. If you take a look in your fridge or kitchen right now, you will find that just about every package you see has a numerical code printed on it. In fact, nearly every item that you buy in a grocery shop, supermarket or super store should have a bar code on it.
The Universal Product Code, UPC, was the first bar code symbology widely adopted. Foreign interest in UPC led to the adoption of the EAN (European Article Numbering) code
Before now, the United States and Canada use UPC bar codes as their standard for retail labelling, whereas the rest of the world uses EAN-13 symbol
It's a system for uniquely identifying trade items (products and services) sold, delivered, warehoused, and billed throughout the retail and commercial distribution channels.  It provides an accurate, efficient and economical means of controlling the flow of products and information through the use of an all-numeric identification system.
EAN-13 does contain a country identifier, but it's more commonly used in Europe and other countries outside the U.S.
The first 2 (sometimes 3) digits,  called the “flag”, indicate in what country the bar code was issued. This “flag” does not tell you, however, in what country the product was produced. For example, a product manufactured in China and sold in Nigeria could have an EAN-13 bar code identifying it as a "Nigeria" product even though it originated in China.

However, some items may be deceiving because they are packaged in Nigeria, while their raw materials are source or imported from China or manufacturer country. For instance, I am aware of a multinational firm whose product is a leader in the market but virtually import all their raw materials including straw. During one of the MANCAP inspection, SON's officer had to suggest purchase of at least straw from Nigeria in my very presence.

Likewise looking for "Made in ABC" would complement your discoveries especially with regard to foods and beverages.

There are huge loopholes in discovering unscrupulous act in the industry which demands some level of skills. Meanwhile let not bother you with such huddles.
