Beyond Poultry Farm Registration

Beyond Poultry Farm Registration

The directive from the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, for states to register all poultry farms operating in their area is a welcome development

The move for registration of all poultry farm is a proactive measure aim at avoiding spread of diseases in Nigeria, particularly the Avian Influenza among poultry farms across the country and enhance rapid response to outbreak of diseases in such farms.

This is imperative in tracking poultry related public health diseases; in case of outbreak of any disease, particularly avian influenza in any poultry farm, it will enable government to respond rapidly by taking appropriate measures to avoid spread to other farms.

FMARD and proponents of this directive should leverage on this move to advance an holistic package;

GOOD DOCUMENTATION PRACTICE
This directive would no doubt enable the farmers to profile data about necessary farm size and activities about their farms. It is pertinent to introduce and encourage standards documentation practices of a typical farm safety plan.
Simple, holistic and organic documentation gesture such as suppliers, buyers and farming practices should be an integral farming lifestyle. This would enhance the purpose of such directive.
Moreover the best time to prepare for emergency is the period of normalcy.

FOOD SECURITY GAP
Verifiable data at this stage is crucial to identifying and understanding the underlying factors for gap in demand- supply trends within federating communities. The size and output of poultry farmers as against consumers food needs would enable government fashion out strategies to managing shortages or windfall

SANITY CHECK
The directive would not only enable policy makers to response rapidly to disease outbreak, but empower agencies to track illegal market authorization of poultry products. Registered poultry farms coupled with documentation practices would indicate possible value chain liners who could be traceable. Hence exposing unwholesome poultry food items, tax evaders and likely hidden sources of outbreaks

ENHANCED VALUED CHAIN
Healthy competitive in the industry definitely would help to look into opportunities in maximizing the most gratifying option for farmers to explore. For instance, egg powder, egg concentrate which have within six months to a year expiration and all year round frozen food.
Beside that, verifiable threats, beside outbreaks, in this segment, might attract government and varsity attention in advancing solutions to challenges peculiar to these areas.

COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE
Holistic perspective of this directive could spell out area of food waste in situation where supply exceeds demand. Poultry farmers who could not access the market, enjoy price stability and settle full scale in the business could have their aspiration fulfill through organized comparative advantage with other states and food business conglomerates

I salute the courage and tenacity of the Honourable Minister of Agricultural and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh for his responsive approach to managing zoonotic disease outbreak in the country. I urge him to extend same to other food segments while expediting action on the enforcement of this initiative
