Food System Porousity; A Nation Without Borders

No doubt, Nigeria has more than enough arable lands to feed the continent of Africa; Ogun State agrarian landscape alone is estimated to be larger than Cape Verde, Croatia and Isreal put together. The northern part of the country is known to be gifted in the production of huge chunk of varied cereals crop unlike the west and east, which prides itself in production of cocoa, coffee, tuber crops and fruits
Agriculture remains the largest sector of the economy yet Nigerians still wallow in ravaging food insecurity, observable level of gross malnutrition, food fraud and rural under development just to mention a few
Inefficient food system would always give raise to multiplicity of social and economic downturn. Malnutrition accounts for N450 billion annual losses in Nigeria GDP, besides post harvest losses, food counterfeiting, and smuggling
The alleged transition of the perceived unconstitutional soldiers "Al Majiris" and the jobless to sudden emergence of the marauding herdsmen, miscreants and blood sucking Boko Haram, is attributed to porous food system. Uncoordinated  rural economic opportunities, prosperity would continuously leave the unengaged youths in the hands of enemies of the state to wreck havoc
Is shocking to know that there is no documentation of various food commodities ferry into the country at a glance. My local government is flooded with plethora of fast moving consumables usually shipped in by road between the earliest hour of the day. Is it the addition of additive like synthetic colour to enhance food aesthetic like palm oil, alteration of expiration date, uncertified food practices and much more
For the record, food system is the paths our food travels through from seed to plates and its effect in the society at large. It does encompass the social, economic, political, environmental, nutritional and geographical context. It put into the limelight food production involving the health, impact assessment of the soil and seed analysis alongside good agricultural practices, documentation, hygiene, safety plan. Every stages of harvesting, storage, processing, distribution, marketing, advertisement, retailing, consumption and food waste management are an integral part of a functional food system.
No responsive and responsible government would compromise the effectiveness of her food system as this in part epitomizes or gauges the seriousness or commitment to national security, citizenry's welfarism, life and property
