#QualityIsEverything; A Clarion Call from All

QualityIsEverything; A Clarion Call from All

Having followed the campaign on getting rid of product counterfeiting and even fake items from Nigerian market right from the influx of importers segment with the advent of SON's Product Authentication Mark which is to be effected from March would no doubt minimize incessant product fraud in the society
Hence this gesture is a timely and laudable thrust to enhancing competitiveness and fairness in the manufacturing sectors

I am also excited with the ongoing campaigns on social media using the hashtag "#QualityIsEverything, #QualityCulture and #DemandandInsist"

Quality is premium in moving any society forward. It is a collective effort from actors, regulators and consumers to insist and demand for quality while cultivating a culture of quality by all as stakeholders in the Nigerian enterprise when its apply to consumers knowledge in identifying counterfeit, fake and genuine products

Product fraud could come in various dimensions; substitution, removal, replacement, tampering, addition, misrepresentation, misbranding, and smuggling

It is obvious that many Nigerians are victims of this daily act in the marketplace, especially in the intermediate and FMCG categories.

It's imperative to know that, product fraudsters are highly knowledgeable about their industry that they are skillful in manipulating the system without being caught or triggering any market imbalances

I can't imagine how many life we had loss to product crimes and still counting without any drastic measures to curb it.

This campaign by the regulatory agency which is primarily saddles to oversee the demand side of the society, could be taking further as part of the campaign strategy on empowering citizens on laws guiding sales of goods and how to go about it as stipulated by laws

It is of note to know that blend of campaign of this magnitude, backed with advocacy and enforcement work best for our society. Not forgetting the apathy and Nigeria Syndrome of pursuing legal matter or product fraud to meaningful conclusion

Making this campaign worthwhile is a clarion call from all and demands the following inputs;

PAY AS YOU APPREHEND
I decided to project this method following a discussion of how an acquaintance narrated why a sum of half a million was paid and product confiscated as penalty for pushing illicit sales of control items. He did explain emphatically how a warehouse was traced far away from the normal store in spite of non display or visibility of the product at sight.
This affirms that teeming Nigerian unemployed citizenry knows perpetrators of this act because they live among us and ply their trade within our locality

You can't imagine knowing that I was shown differences between a branded counterfeit and genuine TV with same features, brand and label by a surgeon. Only to returned the TV in exchange for original brand with higher fees

It is a common practice among Nigerian retailers never to raise refund even knowing that product fraud is committed. It is either you pay additional sum or take legal action

It's amazing to unravel that myriads of our unemployed graduates and Nigerian can graciously identify counterfeit, fake and genuine items within products categories like FMCG, intermediates and durable goods, let alone being place on commission basis in their environs on "Pay as You Apprehend Offenders", a motivational tools towards fishing out unwholesome products

I learnt that why commuters and private car owners are dreadful of VIO is because those not on payroll but strictly on commission do flood our roads especially in Ogun State. This group of personnels will not entertain excuses, thereby adhering to zero tolerance is a necessity in determining their monthly paycheck

TOLL FREE LINE
Consumer Protection Council, CPC, is the only widely known regulator on the demand side unlike other regulatory agencies. Communication and promptness is key to building loyalty in making culture of quality a lifestyle.
Consumers' complaints management are ingredients in building trust and perception for this to thrive. Toll free call in the telecommunication industry has helped potential dissatisfied clients to remain loyal in spite of unsolicited messages and charges.

The motivation to upholding and advancing quality everywhere in the country demands all encompassing customer relation management which I am convinced that toll free call will do the needful

DESK OFFICES IN CLUSTER MARKET
Computer village, Alaba International just to mention a few, are cluster markets, housing numerous electronic gadgets alongside arrays of counterfeit items. Such open platform call for a desk office which would serve to conscientious would be fraudsters and serve as deterrence to sales of substandard goods

MOBILE COURT
The use of mobile court in cluster market arenas like "computer village" is an avenue to process cases of product fraud alongside existing channels which could go a long way in abating the apathy of delay in judicial prosecution while installing confidence in the commission.

COMPLIANCE REWARD SYSTEM
CPC can imbibe a competitive reward system from NQA to compensating actors, consumers and states that are at the fore front of championing quality

There are still many misled food label, product counterfeit, unsafe devices display in the markets, inclusion of unauthorized synthetic food additive without any trace of mandatory declaration on label as specified by NAFDAC and so on.

While should product fraudsters smile to the banks at the expense of citizens' woes?

As a food justice activist it is expected of me not to be economical with the fact reiterating that there is a general perception that our regulators have continuously allow the industries to regulate itself in contrast to best practices.
Perpetrators of this act would always be on the increase unless some of these discrepancies are tried in court of law or the loopholes are blocked.

Millions of Nigerians are being drag into the poverty line as a result of lack of quality; diet related risk factors are more than other health risk factors combined; think of diabetes, heart disease, name it. The multiplier effects of food poisoning is beyond seeing cockroaches in our drinks. Same with other sectors

Government should be aware that trillions of naira are filtering away for not taking issues of quality defect seriously. For instance, upholding quality in the food industry alone could finance fifty percent of our budget because food is centre to everything.
Think of UK where foods and football contribute immensely to the economy not mentioning other sectors

I celebrate the entire team and stakeholders for their courage and effort for a better country and sanity in the land.

I hope this would not be a one off gesture. Depending Consumer Protection Council to carry all and sundry along to determining which way the pendulum of #DemandandInsist would go
